Born in 1975 from Tommaso Cimili’s idea of “providing solid illumination while keeping decoration and the lamp itself to a minimum,” the Daphine lamp was placed in the top-floor bedroom of Donald Judd’s New York home and studio, 101 Spring Street, where Judd, a central figure of 1960s Minimal Art and one of the most influential artists in postwar American art, lived during the late 1960s to the 1970s. There, it stood alongside iconic furniture by Aalto, Thonet, and Rietveld as the only household appliance.
